Veteran group returns for Lady Tiger volleyball

ST. JAMES – A group of players who have been together for a long time will make up the core of the St. James High School volleyball squad this season.

St. James is scheduled to open the 2007 season on Tuesday, Aug. 28 by hosting Salem.

The Lady Tigers return three starters from last season’s squad, which finished 14-8-1. This year’s team has 22 players on the roster and is senior-laden.

"Practice has gone very well," said Amy Wells, who along with Liz Engelbrecht are the St. James High School volleyball coaches. "Our goal is winning district.

"I think our strength will be cohesiveness. These girls have played together quite a bit. And I think we’ll be a threat at the net."

The setter for the Lady Tigers will be senior Kate Rapp, a returning starter.

The team’s main outside hitters are senior Ashley Lorts and senior Tiffany Davis.

At middle back is senior Sarah Naji.

At the middle front position senior Erica Rieken and junior Brittany Herode.

At left back are senior Jessica McMinn and senior Tristan McCormick.

On the right side are junior Kinsey Alexander and senior Carlee Covington.

At libero is senior Keisha Pedro.

"Ashley Lorts and Brittany Herode definitely stand out," Wells said. "There is not a kid in the whole conference that works as hard as Lorts. And Herode has very natural athletism. Davis is coming back from an injury (knee surgery) but is coming back pretty strong. Rapp’s sets being consistent will be a big help this year.

"All of the kids are very dedicated. They’ve been with me since their seventh-grade year and always give 100 percent."
