Lady
Tiger soccer makes first sectional appearance
ST. JAMES – There is no question who is the
heavy favorite here.
And the St. James High School girls’ soccer
team couldn’t care less.
The Lady Tigers know they face an uphill
battle against state-ranked Springfield Catholic
Tuesday, May 22 in Missouri Class 1 Sectional
action at Anderson Field in Waynesville.
However, for a team in just its fifth year of
existence which just completed its first winning
campaign ever, nothing is going to dim the
moment for the St. James Lady Tigers.
St. James (10-5-2) is slated to play Catholic
(17-4) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The winner of that sectional game will meet
the St. Dominic (15-5-4) vs. Moberly (14-8-2)
sectional survivor in Class 1 Quarterfinal
action at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26 at Columbia
Hickman High School.
Catholic has advanced to the quarterfinals
the previous two seasons.
Top-seeded St. James won its first district
title last week by beating second-seeded
Sullivan 3-1 in the finals of the District 11
Tournament. The Catholic Lady Irish advanced by
beating Willard 3-1 last week in the District 12
championship game.
Second-year Lady Tiger head coach Casey Smith
has told her troops that the hard part is
over...now that St. James is in the post-season
anything can happen.
"Once you’re there, you know you’re
going to face a good team," Smith said.
"That’s what I told the girls...once you
get there anything can happen."
Ben Timson has been the Catholic head coach
ever since the program started 10 years ago. He
knows how the Lady Tigers feel. His squad got to
the Class 1 Final Four in its second year of
existence and certainly knows that thrill of
accomplishment. Catholic, currently ranked No. 5
in the Missouri Class 1 state poll, has been to
three Final Fours, placing runner-up in 2004.
"I would primarily emphasize to them it’s
an excellent opportunity to go up against a
pretty good team...see what they do and progress
from there," Timson said. "That’s
what I’d tell them."
Certainly the Lady Tigers are going to have
their hands full. Catholic has impressive
victories over large schools such as Rolla and
Springfield Kickapoo – teams that will be
facing off in Class 2 Sectional action tonight.
"We’ve played pretty well,"
Timson said. "We’ve had some pretty good
wins."

Hauck is the Lady Tigers’ top scorer with
10 goals and five assists while Rapp has six
goals and three assists, Daniels four goals and
eight assists and Cain three goals.
"Our knowledge of the game has improved,
as well as our passion," Smith said.
"We worked really hard last year to get the
basics down so that we can play with bigger
schools.
"I know (Catholic) is a strong team.
That’s obvious. But we’re coming out to play
hard. We’re building a program."
