Wools
bounces back by qualifying for state
ST.
JAMES – Matt Wools summed up his 2006 junior
golf season for the St. James High School golf
team in one word.
"Horrible," he called it.
Wools has made up for that disappointment of
a year ago with a state tournament berth.
Wools will be representing the Tiger golfers
at the Missouri Class 3 State Tournament, to be
held Monday and Tuesday, May 14-15, at Deer Lake
Golf Course in Springfield.
Wools advanced to the state meet through the
Missouri Class 3 District 2 Tournament, held
April 30 at the Franklin County Country Club in
Washington. He shot 43-44--87 in the district
tourney, which proved to be the cut-off score
for the state meet.
He was the only St. James player to advance
to the state meet this season.
After a solid high school golf season as a
sophomore, during which he earned All-Four
Rivers Conference honors, things turned ugly on
the golf course for Wools last season.
"Last year I had the shanks really
bad," Wools said. "And that’s got a
good thing to have on the golf course."
More and more practice time off the tees and
greens have made a difference during his senior
season. Wools has been much more consistent this
spring. He shot 85 to return to the
all-conference team and, eventually, met his
goal of qualifying for the state tourney.
"Matt’s been around golf a long
time," said St. James golf coach Kevin
Conway. "It’s surprising he didn’t do
as well last year. This year I don’t think he
put as much pressure on himself to do well. He
just got out and played.
"Last year he was up and down, up and
down. But with every meet this year he was very
consistent in his scoring."
Wools agrees.
"I was very pleased at the first
conference meet we had this year I was meet
medalist," said Wools, who along with high
school teammate Zane Garr will be attending and
playing on the golf team at William Woods
University next school year. "This year I’ve
been more consistent with my game because I’m
a smarter golfer. I just wanted to play
consistent; to play my game."
Wools will play a practice round at Deer Lake
on Sunday before teeing off the state tourney
the following day.
"Last year I think it was 8-under at
this course (to gain all-state honors),"
Wools said. "There are a lot of birdie
chances on that course. I’m hoping to shoot
under 80."
And if he does that he has a chance for an
all-state placement.
"I believe there is a chance," he
said. "I think it’s in me, if I’m
playing consistent."
"He’s played the course before and he’s
said he played really well," Conway said.
"I can see him shoot 83 or 84 and have a
two-day total in the 169 range or better."

fifth with 344, St. Clair sixth with 350,
