Tiger
baseball more experienced this spring
ST. JAMES – There was much on-the-job
training going on with the St. James High School
baseball team in 2006.
And Tiger head coach Marty Hauck hopes those
struggles will pay off this spring.
St. James will have seven starters and 11
varsity lettermen back from last season’s 2-18
squad.
The Tigers are scheduled to open the season
on Monday, March 19 at Pacific as part of the
Four Rivers Classic tournament. The team plays
its home opener on Tuesday, March 20 against St.
Clair in the Four Rivers Classic and also has
games scheduled in the event on March 21 and
March 24.
Hauck, entering his second season as Tiger
head coach, has 25 players on the roster this
season. He’s hopeful that the playing
experience his players received during a
difficult campaign last spring will make a
difference this year.
"I’m hoping it will," Hauck said.
"The players have come out fired up and we
have more intensity in practice. They are used
to my drills and the way practices are
run."
Returning at first base for the Tigers is
senior Jonathan Goad.
Junior Ryan Parker figures to be the starting
second baseman, when he’s not on the mound.
When he’s not pitching junior William
Morrison is at shortstop.
The starting third base job is being
contested by a pair of sophomores – Chris
Kearbey and Kaleb Stowers.
Here is another battle at catcher between
junior Ryan Bautenhan and senior Josh Gregory.
Those two shared the position last year.
Senior Jordan Parsons figures to start in
leftfield while senior Nick Olivas is in center.
The starting rightfield position could be a
platoon between the trio of first-year senior
Chaz Gunter, junior Larry Karnes and junior Luke
Auxier.
Kearbey, Morrison and Parker figure to be the
top three starting pitchers. Gunter, a
left-hander, is also in the mix as is junior
Jonathan Ammerman.
"I think our defense will be
improved," Hauck said. "We scrimmaged
(last week) and of the 14 tries defensively we
only had two errors....and they were throwing
errors."
Hauck feels the Tigers will have more depth
in their pitching staff this spring.
"We have 10 pitchers who have thrown
live and that will be a strength," Hauck
said. "All the pitchers got in the middle
of the mix last year. William got to see the
third-ranked team in the state in (St. Francis)
Borgia. Kearbey and Parker got to see Sullivan,
who is ranked third in the state this year.
"If they’re hot we’ll leave them in
there. But we have some depth this year. And we’ve
got a lefty this year (Gunter) who can be used
as a good setup man."
Leading the offensive charge will be Olivas
and Morrison, who both hit over .300 while
earning All-Four Rivers Conference honors last
season.
"We’re going to have to put the ball
in play and manufacture some runs," Hauck
said. "Hit and run, steal some bases. All
of our running times are faster this year."
