4th-quarter
goose egg lifts Rolla girls past St. James
ST.
JAMES – A goose egg in the fourth period was the
difference in the girls’ basketball game between Rolla
and St. James high schools on Thursday, Jan. 10.
The host St. James Lady Tigers were held scoreless in
the fourth period, allowing Rolla to come from behind to
post a 37-34 victory.
The tone in the defensive struggle was set by St. James
early in the first period, as the Lady Tigers took the
early lead by using a full-court press to force several
Rolla turnovers. However, RHS came back late in the period
to cut the St. James edge to 11-10 entering the second
period.
Only seven points were scored in the second period –
six by St. James, as the Lady Tigers went into
intermission up 17-11.
Offense was restored in the third period, as St. James
outscored Rolla 17-16 to take a 34-27 edge into the fourth
period.
However, St. James wouldn’t score again, as the Lady
Bulldog defense produced several St. James turnovers and
Rolla outscored the Lady Tigers 10-0 in the quarter.
A field goal by senior guard Kaitlin Bramel with 1:50
left gave RHS the lead for good, 35-34. Junior forward
Tori Hagni added two more free throws for RHS with :18
remaining to make the final score.
"I thought it was the hardest four quarters we’ve
played this season," said St. James head coach Brad
Conway, whose squad fell to 10-3. "We had
opportunities. We missed free throws and missed some open
shots. We weren’t real strong with the ball at
times."
"Any time Rolla and St. James come together you
expect a heck of a game," said RHS head coach Bryce
Swafford. "When we want to play hard and put pressure
on people we can be successful."
Bramel and junior forward Dani Steele each had 12
points for Rolla, now 6-6.
Freshman forward Rachel Connell led St. James with 13
points while junior forward Brittany Herode added seven
rebounds.

Lady
Tiger cagers have nice group to build around
ST. JAMES – It won’t be easy to replace
the two big losses to graduation.
However, the St. James High School girls’
basketball team has a nice group to build around
for the 2007-08 campaign.
The Lady Tigers have three starers and five
varsity lettermen back from last season’s 17-9
squad. St. James is scheduled to open the season
next week in the Potosi Tournament.
"We don’t have that big person in the
middle like we’ve had in the last few
years," said St. James head coach Brad
Conway. "But I think we could be quicker.
We’re mixing in a lot of new kids. We’re
trying to find chemistry and consistency. We’ve
got to do a real good job of rebounding this
year."
Starters back for the Lady Tigers include 5-5
senior Stephanie Birkner, 5-6 senior Ashley
Lorts and 5-10 junior Brittany Herode. They are
expected to be joined in the starting lineup by
5-5 junior Abbey Mahaney and 5-7 sophomore
Jordan Bowen.
Others in the varsity rotation include 5-9
junior Marilyn Hughes, 5-9 freshman Rachel
Connell and 5-6 sophomore Ashley Hoener.
Herode averaged 10 points and six rebounds
per game last season while Lorts averaged four
points and four steals.
The big losses to graduation include
all-district performers Kristin Marshall (13.7
points, 4.6 assists, 2.9 steals, 52
three-pointers) at guard and Whitney Macormic
(10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 blocks) at
center.
Without the big girl inside Conway stresses
the Lady Tigers will have to beat teams with
their quickness and speed.
"In a half-court set or in full-court we’ve
got to take advantage of our quickness,"
Conway said. "Consistency is the key. We’ve
got to play to our strengths.
"It’s going to be hard to replace
(Marshall and Macormic). We’re looking for
balance now. Herode can score inside and also
step out and shoot the jumper. Everybody we have
does some really good things a times."
Conway expects several teams to have a chance
at the Four Rivers Conference championship.
"New Haven is going to be strong,"
he said. "Sullivan looks pretty solid. They’ve
got a little height and speed. I look at those
two being the front-runners right now."
Here is the Lady Tigers’ 2007-08 schedule:
