RHS baseball pounds Salem

SALEM – Pitchers Chris Bowe and Josh Stephens of the Rolla High School baseball team got plenty of offensive support on Monday, May 5, as the Bulldogs pounded Salem 14-0 in non-league action.

The victory improved Rolla’s record to 17-3 overall.

Bowe upped his won-loss mark to a perfect 7-0 by allowing just one hit and fanning six over the first two innings. Stephens completed a four-hit shutout by working the final three innings.

The game was halted after five innings due to the run rule.

Rolla scored in every inning.

The Bulldogs got two runs in the first inning when Dalton Friend doubled and Tyler Sinnott walked ahead of a two-run double by Will Morrison.

Four more RHS runs followed in the second inning, as Jeff Brown smacked an RBI triple and Cameron Fore had an RBI double to highlight the frame.

Rolla added three runs in the third. After three walks Friend was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Sinnott then laced a two-run double.

In the fourth RHS got two runs, on a Fore sacrifice fly and a Daniel Perdue groundout. In the fifth Rolla added three more runs, with Bowe and Tanner Dinsdale both adding RBI doubles.

Rolla also won the junior varsity game 4-3. Blayne Shockley had three hits for the RHS jayvee squad while Seth McWilliams got the victory on the mound.

The Bulldog jayvee squad also went 2-0 to win the Rolla Jayvee Tournament on Saturday at First Community National Bank Field. RHS clipped Houston 8-7 and St. James 8-6 in the tourney.

Rolla’s varsity had been scheduled to play Union in the championship game of the Four Rivers Classic in Union on Saturday. However, due to a medical family emergency by one of the Rolla players, the Bulldogs did not play the game. Earlier on Saturday Union defeated Bowling Green 13-3 in the semifinals to advance to the tourney finals.

The Four Rivers Classic was the season-opening event for Rolla, but was backed up several times due to weather.

In the first game Rolla clipped Springfield Glendale 8-7. And in the nightcap RHS had an 11-game winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to Springfield Parkview. The results left Rolla 6-3 in conference play. The double-header was caused due to an earlier rainout.

Rolla 8, Glendale 7

Rolla scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and then held on for the win.

RHS got single runs in the first and second innings and two runs in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh. The Falcons got two runs in the bottom of the second, one in the fifth and two in each of the sixth and seventh before falling short.

Rolla overcame five errors in the game by outhitting Glendale 14-7.

Friend swatted a homer along with a double and single for the winners while Perdue had a double and single, Fore had three hits and Sinnott added two hits. Sinnott and Perdue each had two RBI.

Friend was the starting and winning pitcher, working into the sixth inning and allowing five runs on four hits and seven walks while striking out nine. Morrison finished up for the save, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.

Parkview 3, Rolla 0

Parkview shut Rolla out on four hits. The Vikings got one run in the top of the first inning and two in the third.

Brent Marston was the losing pitcher, with relief help from Ross Parker. That duo allowed just five hits. Marston gave up three hits and six walks.

Bulldog golfers win Waynesville Tourney

FORT LEONARD WOOD – The Rolla High School golf team proved to be the most balanced squad in the field, leading to the Bulldogs’ team title in the Waynesville Tournament Tuesday at Piney Valley Golf Course.

In the tournament format each school used the scores of two individual players and two, 2-man scramble teams.

Rolla fired a 297 total to win the team crown by three strokes. Lebanon was second with 300, Camdenton I third with 323, Dixon fourth with 327, Waynesville I fifth with 333, Camdenton II sixth with 356, Laquey seventh with 371, Waynesville II eighth with 432 and Richland ninth with 461. Iberia and Crocker also competed but didn’t have enough players for a team score.

After stormy weather threatened whether the tournament would be played, the skies cleared and sun came out at Piney Valley, and there proved to be only a half-hour delay to the start of the event. The course, hammered by floods and hail this spring was in good shape for the golfers, although players said it played soft due to the wet weather.

Dixon senior Jace Long, a senior All-America junior golfer who has already signed to play for the Mizzou golf team next school year, was easily the class of the field individually.

Long dominated play on Tuesday, firing a 5-under-par 32-35—67 to win meet medalist honors by six strokes. Rolla’s Chris Martin was runner-up to Long with 73 individually while Lebanon’s John Helton shot 76.

RHS has new wrestling head coach

ROLLA – The Rolla High School wrestling team will have a new head coach in 2008-09.

Jeremy Jamison, a homegrown wrestler who has been the Bulldog wrestling head coach for six seasons, has resigned that position.

At its regularly-scheduled meeting on Thursday, April 17 the Rolla Board of Education accepted Jamison coaching resignation and hired Kellen Laws as his replacement.

Laws becomes RHS wrestling head coach after serving in the same capacity at Springfield Parkview High School the past two years. Like Rolla, Parkview is a member of the Ozark Conference.

Jamison, currently a teacher at the Rolla Middle School, said he resigned his coaching duties so he can give his full attention to his new job as guidance counselor at the Rolla Junior High School. He takes over as a counselor at the Rolla Junior High School in the 2008-09 school year, replacing the retiring Dennis Noel. Ironically, Noel was Jamison’s wrestling head coach when the latter was a student at RHS.

Laws becomes the seventh person to serve as head coach in the history of RHS wrestling.

"I’m going to need to focus my attention on learning my new job," Jamison said. "Coaching is a grind. It takes a toll, particularly when you have a young family. It was time.

"I’m excited for Kellen. I think the program is looking good for the next couple of years."

Jamison has known Laws for some time and says he is a good hire for RHS.

"He’s from a strong high school program in Farmington," said RHS Athletic Director Kelly Hinshaw of Laws. "I feel like he’ll bring some excitement and draw more and more kids into the program. Jeremy did a good job the last few years of working with the kids’ (wrestling) club and in the community. Kellen will just continue that."

Hinshaw said the RHS Wrestling Camp has been sent for June 10-13 for youths in grade school and up. He said there will be two sessions, one for the younger kids and the other for high school-aged wrestlers.

"It’s something we’re excited about," Hinshaw said of the camp. "It’s for the experienced wrestlers but also it will give the club kids and new kids a chance to compete."

Jamison, age 39, has been a big part of the tradition of RHS wrestling. A 1987 RHS graduate, Jamison was a two-time state qualifier, a former district champion and a former conference champion for the Bulldog wrestling squad before going on and competing for the Central Missouri State wrestling squad.

Later Jamison returned to RHS as a teacher and assistant coach for the wrestling squad before taking over as head coach six years ago.

He is the only Bulldog wrestling head coach to boast a state champion at the school. Blayne Shockley won the Missouri Class 3 103-pound state championship in 2007. This past season Shockley was runner-up in the state tournament at 112.

"I had a great time working in the program," said Jamison, who also served as the RHS boys’ soccer assistant coach this past fall. "And I’ll continue to help in any way I can."
