Bulldog
netters hoping for more success
ROLLA – With three varsity regulars back to build
around, the Rolla High School boys’ tennis team feels it
will have a chance for another solid campaign this spring.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 9-3 dual meet season in
2007. There are 18 players on the roster including seniors
Raj Mishra, Jason Newell and Mark Wronkiewicz, who were
all a part of the varsity unit a year ago.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to open the season on
Monday, March 17 with a dual meet at Willow Springs.
"We were finally able to get outside a couple of
times last week," said RHS tennis coach Joe Schisler.
"The guys are all in pretty good shape. We actually
were able to get a couple of rounds of challenge matches
in and there has been a lot of movement up and down the
lineup, all the way to No. 11. I anticipate things will be
moving more."
Right now Mishra and Newell are 1-2 in the varsity
singles competition while sophomore Cody Martin is at No.
3, Wronkiewicz No. 4, sophomore Brenden Dowdy No. 5 and
sophomore Matt Threadgill No. 6.
Among those battling for the 7-8 spots are Garrett
Grahl and Josh Ferrell.
Both Mishra and Newell are making sizable jumps, as
they played No. 3 and No. 6 respectively in singles last
year. Wronkiewicz was at No. 4 much of last year.
"Our seniors, as well as Cody Martin, have really
improved," Schisler said. "This preseason Cody
has played a lot and learned a lot. He’s worked his way
up the lineup.
"(The 1-2 singles positions) are going to be one
of our keys. Raj is one of the best athletes we’ve had
in that position. He’s a true No. 1, but that position
is highly competitive. Jason has made a big jump. He’s
so fit he gives kids a difficult time. Wronkiewicz was at
No. 2 but lost to Newell and Martin in some challenge
matches."
