Young
players to make difference for RHS golfers
ROLLA – With the infusion of some young talent to the
lineup, the Rolla High School boys’ golf team is hopeful
to off-set some big graduation losses this spring.
The Bulldog golfers are scheduled to open the season on
Tuesday, March 18 by hosting St. Francis Borgia in a dual
meet at Oak Meadow Country Club (3:30 p.m.).
RHS enjoyed a strong 2007, placing second in the Ozark
Conference Meet and third in the district tourney.
However, lost to graduation from that squad are multi-year
regulars Tanner Dinsdale, Chris Kiersz and Joe Steelman.
Dinsdale was a Missouri Class 4 Championships qualifier
last spring.
"It’s hard to say where we’re at," said
RHS golf coach Zach Nixon. "We haven’t had much
time to practice. I think we’ll have a real strong team
this year. We have three players and a sophomore who are
excellent players."
The players with varsity experience back are junior
Brandon Weaver, senior Brock Jones and junior Chris
Martin. Weaver and Martin were All-Ozark Conference
selections last year.
Added to that trio this year is sophomore Will Baylor,
who is expected to be one of the top players this spring.
"Right now things are so tight," Nixon said.
"The fifth spot is up in the air but the top four
players could be really strong.
"Right now at the top are Weaver and Baylor. They’ve
been tearing it up. And Martin and Jones have not been
that far back."
Battling for the No. 5 varsity spot have been seniors
Chris Dodge and Taylor Young and junior Ryan Maples.
