RHS
boy netters look to be strong again this spring
ROLLA – With five varsity lettermen
returning to build around, the Rolla High School
boys’ tennis team again has the look of one of
the area’s top teams.
RHS is scheduled to open the season on
Monday, March 19 with a dual meet against Willow
Springs at 4 p.m. at Ber Juan Park.
The Bulldogs return five varsity regulars
from last season’s squad, which finished 9-4
in dual meet competition. The lone loss to
graduation was Stephen Allen, who played at
either the No. 2 or 3 slot last spring.
"It’s an outstanding group," said
Joe Schisler, who is co-coach of the RHS boys’
tennis team, along with Lynne Wilson. "We’ve
got three returning seniors in the top three and
two other juniors who have played varsity since
they were freshmen."
In all the Bulldogs have 19 players on the
roster this spring.
So far in challenge matches senior Rui Xu is
playing the No. 1 singles spot.
At No. 2 on the singles list is senior John
Graham while senior Marcus Wilson is at No. 3,
junior Raj Mishra at No. 4, junior Jason Newell
at No. 5 and junior Mark Wronkiewicz at No. 6.
Xu, Graham, Wilson, Mishra and Wronkiewicz
were all on the varsity squad last season.
Junior transfer Zac Heck also is challenging
for a varsity spot, as is senior Corey Dunn, who
Schisler calls one of the Bulldogs’ most
improved players.
The varsity doubles teams will likely be made
up from those eight players.
"It’s very competitive at every
spot...really 1 through 19 on the roster,"
Schisler said. "On the second day of
challenges we already had kids move up four
spots.
"This is maybe one of our best freshman
groups ever to come in. And we have a solid
sophomore group. I anticipate Heck will
eventually be in the varsity mix. And Dunn is
very much improved. We’re deep. We’ve got
kids around 10, 11 and 12 (on the depth chart)
very capable of playing. They would probably be
on varsity at a lot of schools."
With the returning talent, Schisler said he’s
looking forward to seeing how the Bulldogs match
up with the competition on opposing squads this
spring.
"Several teams we play graduated about
half of their teams," he said. "It
will be interesting to see how we do against
them this year."
