hit like I think we will and had a very tough

Tough
opener; RHS softball falls, 11-6
CUBA – It was not a fun season-opener for
the Rolla High School softball team, as the Lady
Bulldogs begin the 2007 campaign by falling to
Cuba 11-6 in non-conference play on Tuesday,
Aug. 21.
Casey Newman was the starting and losing
pitcher for RHS. Heather Jones also pitched for
the Lady Bulldogs.
Rolla’s offensive produced 13 hits. Kim
Ruth was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base
while Maggie Priesmeyer was 3-for-4 with a
double; Cera Armistead 2-for-3 with two RBI and
a double; Kristi Curtis was 2-for-4 with an RBI,
and Lindsey Heimbaugh and Jones each had a hit.
"The things we needed to do to win we
did not do," said RHS head coach Tim Dunn.
"The things we were concern with is what
happened. We had far too many errors, both
mentally and physically, to give ourselves much
of a chance to win. We did not pitch well
enough, gave up too many hits and too many
walks, but also did not take advantage of our
opportunities on defense.
"We did hit the ball pretty well, but
will have to do much more defensively and with
our pitching to turn things around. We also need
to give Cuba some credit. They played well
defensively, hit the ball real well and
basically earned the win."
Cuba also won the junior varsity game 7-6.
Taylor Skelton was the starting and losing
hurler for the Rolla jayvee squad. Kylie Croft
and Jacey Crain each had three hits for the RHS
jayvee team while Emily Carroll had two hits and
scored two runs and Morgann Kleeschulte had two
hits.
The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play again
on Thursday, Aug. 23, by hosting Jefferson City
Helias in another non-conference game, starting
at 5 p.m. at Schuman Park.

New
look for RHS softball this fall
ROLLA – It’s going to be a new look on
the field for the Rolla High School softball
team this fall.
The Lady Bulldogs have put together some
solid seasons in the past few years, including a
15-11 mark in 2006.
However, the Lady Bulldogs have some
replacing to do this campaign, as just two
starters return.
Rolla was scheduled to open the 2007 season
Tuesday, Aug. 21 at Cuba.
The big loss to graduation was four-year
starting pitcher Paige Sturgeon. And with a new
catcher as well, there will be a complete
turnover of the RHS battery.
"There is a lot of inexperience,"
said RHS softball head coach Tim Dunn. "But
the kids seem to be handling it. Some saw
varsity action from time to time last year, and
Maggie (Priesmeyer) and Kim (Ruth) started.
"I don’t think the inexperience will
be a factor."
The key position of pitcher could be shared
by senior Casey Newman and sophomore Heather
Jones.
"Throughout the summer both pitched just
about every game," Dunn said. "Heather
probably throws with more speed and movement.
Casey is more polished. If both keep the ball
down and we play good defense we should be
alright."
There will be a new catcher handling those
two in junior transfer Lindsey Heimbaugh, who
has logged plenty of summer softball action with
area teams over the past few years.
Senior Kristi Curtis will be the starting
first baseman this season.
Junior Anni Villeme is at second base.
Priesmeyer, a senior who was the RHS starter
at first base last season, moves to shortstop
this year.
Senior Cera Armistead will man third base.
In the outfield senior Erinn Hall is in
leftfield.
Ruth, a junior, was the leftfield starter
last year but is moving to center this fall. She
was an all-district and all-region selection a
year ago.
In rightfield several players could see
action, including senior Taylor Davis, senior
Brittany Laney and Jones.
Dunn feels his team defense could be a
strength.
"Kristi has played first base most of
her career," Dunn said. "Armistead has
been unreal at third; she has really been
playing well there. Maggie has played at
shortstop before; she has a good arm. And Anni
has played well in the summer. Lindsey has a
good arm at catcher – there was only one steal
off her over the summer. Ruth is very
experienced in the outfield and Hall and Taylor
have played a lot at the junior varsity level.
We won’t know until we get into games really
what to expect (defensively)."
Ruth, who batted .350 a year ago, is the top
hitter back.
"We’ve been hitting the ball real
well," Dunn said. "We could have a lot
of high-scoring games, and that would be fine
with me."
Here is the Lady Bulldogs’ 2007 schedule
