Morgan
beats Shockley in state finals
COLUMBIA – The rematch didn’t go Rolla’s way.
For the second time in as many years Blayne Shockley of
the Rolla High School wrestling team and Aaron Morgan of
Waynesville met for a state championship.
Unfortunately for Shockley, the results were reversed
this year.
Morgan completed a three-match seasonal sweep of
Shockley on Saturday, Feb. 16, winning 9-4 in the
112-pound state championship match at the Missouri Class 3
State Tournament at the Mizzou Arena on the campus of the
University of Missouri.
In 2007, in the 103-pound weight division, it was
Shockley who defeated Morgan three times – including the
state-championship match.
This year Shockley, 37-4, got to the championship match
by beating Brock Harrison of North County 7-1 in the first
round Thursday and then knocking off Blake Wenzel of
Jefferson City Helias 4-3 and Patrick Grigsby of Webb City
8-2 on Friday.
Two other RHS wrestlers competed in the state tourney.
At 189 senior Kevin Phelps lost to Steve Dopp of St.
Charles West 12-4 Thursday before beating Johnny Thomas of
Raytown by pin in wrestle-backs on Thursday night. On
Friday Phelps lost to Waynesville’s Andre Taylor 6-4.
At 125 the Bulldogs’ Chris Sanders dropped two
straight on Thursday, falling to Daniel Allnutt of
Warrensburg 11-6 and to Dan Hanify of Washington 19-10.

Two
Bulldog wrestlers survive first day at state
COLUMBIA
– Two of the three Rolla High School state qualifiers
were still alive after the first day of competition in the
Missouri Class 3 State Tournament Thursday, Feb. 14 at the
Mizzou Arena on the campus of the University of Missouri.
In the team standings Rolla was tied for 31st
after the first day with five points. Defending champion
Holt was in first place with 34 points followed by Kearney
second with 29 and Farmington third with 27.
For
the Bulldogs sophomore Blayne Shockley won his opening
match in the 112-pound weight division. Shockley, last
year’s state champion at 103, defeated Brock Harrison of
North County 7-1 in Thursday’s first round match to
improve to 35-3.
Also for the Bulldogs senior Kevin Phelps was still
alive at 189. Phelps lost to Steve Dopp from St. Charles
West 12-4 in the first round. However, in wrestle-backs
Phelps pinned Johnny Thomas of Raytown to improve to 19-8
on the season.
Both
Shockley and Phelps were scheduled to continue competition
on Friday, Feb. 15.
Rolla’s Chris Sanders was eliminated at 125, losing
to Daniel Allnutt of Warrensburg 11-6 in the first round
and to Dan Hanify of Washington 19-10 in wrestle-backs.
Sanders, a junior, ends the season with a 23-10 record.

RHS
wrestlers top Lakers on Senior Night
ROLLA
– The Rolla High School wrestling team celebrated its
Senior Night in fine fashion on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
The Bulldog wrestlers tuned up for the upcoming Ozark
Conference Meet by stopping league rival Camdenton 42-39
in a dual meet Tuesday at the RHS practice gym.
The event began with the 189-pound weight class and the
Bulldogs started fast, posting victories by pin in the
meet’s first six contested matches. RHS won a seventh
straight on an injury default.
"I was very pleased, especially with those guys
coming out of the chute like that; starting out with six
pins and the injury default," said RHS head coach
Jeremy Jamison. "They came out aggressive, and that’s
what I needed to see.
"The first seven weight classes really stepped up
and made the difference. If I see that kind of effort out
of them on a consistent basis it could take them deep into
the postseason."
Rolla improved to 3-5 in dual-meet competition.
Gaining victory by fall for RHS were senior Kevin
Phelps in the 189-pound weight class, senior Ben Buchka at
215, junior Marcus Hibbard at heavyweight, sophomore

RHS
wrestlers place second in Republic Tournament
REPUBLIC – On the strength of four wrestlers reaching
the finals of their respective weight classes – with two
of them earning individual championships – the Rolla
High School wrestling team placed second overall in the
10-team Republic Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 12.
Bolivar won the team title with 244 points followed by
Rolla with 234.5 points, Springfield Hillcrest third with

176, Reeds Spring sixth with 150, Logan-Rogersville

Placing first for the Bulldog wrestlers were sophomore
Blayne Shockley in the 112-pound weight class and senior
Kevin Phelps at 189. In their respective championship
matches Shockley pinned Nixa’s Andy Caudal while Phelps
beat Reeds Spring’s Chris Youngblood 11-4.
Earning second places for the RHS wrestlers were

Third places for the Bulldogs came from freshman Jesse
Conaway at 119, sophomore Joel Laney at 130, sophomore

could have been at – the Branson Tournament was a really
tough tournament," said RHS head coach Jeremy
Jamison. "But Bolivar was a really tough team, we saw
them at the (Columbia) Rock Bridge Tournament too."
"Our guys wrestled well. Maedgen, for being a
first-year freshman at a varsity tournament…I was real
happy with him. And Phelps is a pretty steady guy. He is
really strong and that make shim a force to be reckoned
with."
The Bulldogs are scheduled to host Lebanon on Thursday,
Jan. 17 in a dual meet, with junior varsity action
starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity contest to follow. On
Saturday, Jan. 19 RHS is slated to compete in the Francis

Rolla’s
Shockley falls in No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle
WAYNESVILLE
– It was No. 1 vs. No. 2 during the high school
wrestling dual meet between high school rivals Rolla and
Waynesville Tuesday night, Jan. 8.
And, unfortunately for Rolla and Blayne Shockley, No. 2
won out this time.
In a classic regular-season dual meet match pitting the
top two wrestlers in the Missouri Class 3 112-pound weight
division at Waynesville, Waynesville sophomore Aaron
Morgan scored a pair of points with :19 remaining to come
from behind and beat defending 103-pound state champion
Shockley of Rolla 4-3.
Waynesville went on to easily win the dual meet 55-15.
The coaches from each team agreed to make the 112-pound
match the final of the night, building the excitement.
It was Morgan who Shockley defeated in the state finals
last year when both were freshmen. The two standouts moved
up a weight class to 112 this season. And in the current
Missouri Class 3 state rankings Shockley is ranked No. 1
at 112 while Morgan is No. 2.
After a tentative first period where neither wrestler
could score a point, Shockley and Morgan each scored a
pair of points in the second period to leave the score
tied 2-2 entering the final period.
Shockley scored a single point early in the third
period to take a 3-2 edge.
That stayed the score until Morgan scored a two-point
takedown with :19 remaining. Morgan was able to ride out
the rest of the time for the 4-3 victory, as the large
Waynesville Tiger crowd erupted with joy as the final
buzzer sounded.
Shockley was the one wrestler Morgan could not crack
last season. The two met three times – once in a dual
meet, once in the Ozark Conference Meet and then in the
state finals. Shockley won fairly handily each time,
including a 10-3 win in the 103 state tourney match.
"Both didn’t want to shoot in that first
period," said RHS wrestling head coach Jeremy
Jamison. "Both were tentative on their feet early.
"They were in the state finals last year and we
hope to see them there again this year."
Waynesville also won the junior varsity meet 54-21.
"We’re not in the physical condition we ought to
be in," Jamison said. "By the same token, you
don’t want to peak too soon."
The Bulldog varsity wrestlers, 2-3 in dual-meet
competition, are scheduled to compete in the Republic
Tournament on Saturday.
Here are the results, with the Rolla wrestlers listed
first:
Varsity
119 – Jesse Conaway lost to Russell Flores, 11-0.
125 – Chris Sanders pinned Eric Mateo.
130 – Joel Laney lost to Jake Main, 8-4.

Sinnott
helps give RHS boys TKO win
UNION
– Tyler Sinnott looked more like a boxer than a
basketball player afterward.
But on Friday, Jan. 4 the 5-11 junior guard of the
Rolla High School boys’ basketball team displayed the
spunk of a boxer and the shooting touch of a basketball
player.
Sinnott, despite suffering a possible broken nose in
the first half, got off the mat and fired in a game-high
31 points – including eight in a game-changing third
quarter -- to power the RHS Bulldogs to a 78-43
non-conference victory for the Union Wildcats.
Rolla improves to 6-6 while Union falls to 4-7.
Sinnott caught an elbow to the nose in the second
period. The bloody nose forced him out of the game…only
briefly.
The Bulldogs had a solid start to the game, outscoring
Union 15-8 in the first period. However, Union outscored
RHS 22-18 in the second period to trim its halftime
deficit to three, 33-30.
Sinnott returned for the second half and helped spark a
big Bulldog run.
Turning up the pressure on defense, the Bulldogs began
to force turnovers more frequently, with Sinnott being on
the back end of many of
those transition plays for layups.
The Bulldogs ended up outscoring the Wildcats 25-5 in
the third period to blow the game open.
Twenty more points in the fourth period made sure there
would be no comeback, although Union managed just eight
points in that final quarter.
"I thought we were okay the first couple of
quarters," said RHS head coach Kent Thomas.
"Then we kind of intensified things. One of the big
things we do is kind of wear some teams down.
"Sinnott got clocked in the nose, but he showed
some grit in coming back. When we’re getting those
steals and turnovers, he gets in front of everybody with
his speed and puts them in. He’s a tough nut."
Thomas added he feels Sinnott may have broken the nose.
"I think he might have; I’ve been there, done
that," Thomas said.
Seth Thomas, a 6-3 junior, backed Sinnott’s scoring
output with 12 points while 5-9 sophomore Gavin Otte added
10.
Senior Kyle Kohler had 12 points for Union.
Rolla’s junior varsity team improved to 6-2 by
beating Union 47-31. Union’s jayvee team took a 9-4 lead
after the first period and was up 19-16 at halftime. Just
like the varsity Bulldogs the RHS jayvee team rallied in
the second half, outscoring Union 18-7 in the third period
and 13-5 in the fourth quarter.
Brendon Dowdy led the Rolla jayvee squad with 15
points.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to resume Ozark Conference
play on Tuesday, Jan. 8, traveling to Springfield to meet
Hillcrest High School. The jayvee game is to begin at 6
p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.

Jays
too much for Bulldog wrestlers
JEFFERSON CITY – The Rolla High School wrestling team
opened the 2008 portion of its schedule by falling to the
strong Jefferson City Jays 54-16 on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Rolla’s wins came from Blayne Shockley in the
112-pound weight class, Jacob Sells at 140 and Ben Buchka
at 215.
Shockley, the defending Class 3 103-pound state
champion, continues to be ranked No. 1 in the state this
season at 112.
The injury-riddled Bulldogs fall to 2-2 in dual-meet
competition.
"They’re so deep in their weight classes,"
RHS head coach Jeremy Jamison said of the Jays. "They
were missing three varsity kids and still had good guys to
replace them.
"We have a good group of kids numbers-wise and
talent-wise. We’re doing better. But you’ve got to
