Pitching
key to Newburg baseball fortunes
NEWBURG – The Newburg High School baseball team will
depend on a trio of starting pitchers in its effort to for
a winning season this spring.
The Wolves are scheduled to open the season Monday,
March 24 at Licking.
During the 2007 fall season Newburg finished 7-9
overall and 3-4 in the Frisco League.
Senior right-hander Aaron Gideon returns to be the
Wolves’ No. 1 starting pitcher. He will be joined in the
starting rotation by senior Josh Mudd and sophomore Jon
Mudd. Freshmen Ryan Reagan and Phillip Lott will also get
spot starts throughout the spring.
Sophomore Seth Gideon will provide middle relief and
junior Andrew Lott will be the team’s closer.
Jon Mudd will be at first base while the combination of
Reagan and junior Anthony Skaggs will share the second
base position. Andrew Lott and Aaron Gideon will man
shortstop, with Seth Gideon and sophomore Justin McBride
playing at third base.
Josh Mudd, Seth Gideon and Jon Mudd will share the
catching duties.
The outfield will consist of Phillip Lott or freshman
George Austin in left, junior Brett Williams or junior
Randy Hoffman in center and junior Daniel Skaggs or
sophomore Josh Williams in right.
"For Newburg to be successful this spring our
pitching must limit the walks and be able to pitch around
and through tough situations," said Wolves’ head
coach Russ Mudd. "Defensively we must make the
routine plays and limit the big innings. We must not give
teams four outs in an inning. Offensively we must be able
to put the ball in play, move runners along and get timely
hitting.
"Our goals for the season is to improve each game,
play for first in our tournament and be playing our best
baseball at district time."

Newburg
girls’ season comes to a close
MARSHFIELD – The defending state champions were too
much to overcome for the Newburg High School girls’
basketball team Wednesday, March 5.
The Lady Wolves saw their season come to a close on
Wednesday night, as they were beaten by 2007 state
champion Hartville 54-47 in Missouri Class 2 Sectional
play at Marshfield High School.
Newburg, which posted back-to-back upsets in the
semifinals and finals to win the District 10 Tournament
championship, ends its season with a 14-13 record.
Hartville, 19-5, will meet Crane at 1 p.m. Saturday at
Willard High School in Class 2 Quarterfinal action. In
sectional play last night Crane, now 21-6, defeated Purdy
56-52.
Last night in Marshfield the Newburg Lady Wolves were
tangled in a tight game with the Hartville Lady Eagles.
In the boys’ sectional game at Marshfield on
Wednesday Laquey, like Newburg a Frisco League squad,
advanced to the state quarterfinals by beating Mansfield.
Laquey will now meet Clever at 2:45 p.m. Saturday in
Willard in a matchup of 26-3 teams. Clever is ranked No. 3
in the latest Class 2 state poll while Laquey is ranked
No. 5.
On Wednesday Newburg got off to a fast start, as 5-11
senior forward Shayla Ellzey connected on a three-pointer
with 5:19 left in the first period to give the Lady Wolves
a 5-1 lead.
However, Hartville 5-9 all-state senior guard Brittany
Percival responded with a trey of her own on her way to
eight points in the period.
The lead changed hands four times in the first period.
But the Lady Eagles went on a 9-2 run to end the
first-quarter scoring. And Percival’s three-pointer to
end the period gave Hartville a 15-9 edge entering the
second quarter.
The Lady Wolves reeled off five unanswered points to
begin the second quarter, and a jumper by 5-5 senior
Kaitlin DeLong cut the Lady Eagle edge to 15-14.
Ellzey’s three-pointer at the 2:55 mark gave Newburg
its only lead of the period, 21-20. Hartville would end
the first-half with six unanswered points. And a 17-foot
jumper by Percival with :25 left gave the Lady Eagles a
26-21 halftime advantage.
Newburg struggled for points to start the second half.
And a three-pointer by 5-6 sophomore Blake Kaisler at the
3:38 mark gave Hartville its largest lead of the period,
33-23.
Powered by DeLong, Newburg finally got going on the
offensive end and cut into the Hartville lead. The Lady
Wolves trailed 36-31 entering the fourth period.
However, the Lady Wolves would never regain the lead.
Back-to-back three-pointers by 5-6 sophomore Maggie
Arnall gave Hartville its largest lead of the game. And an
Arnall trey at the 3:59 mark following a Lady Wolf
turnover upped the Hartville advantage to 12, 46-34.
Newburg would make one last comeback attempt,
outscoring Hartville 7-0 over the next 2:04. And a
three-pointer by DeLong with 1:55 left allowed Newburg to
climb back within five points, 46-41.
But Hartville would keep its lead at the free throw
line. In the final 1:30 Hartville went 8-of-11 from the
free throw line, which proved to be enough.
"With the free throws we were fouling the right
people," said Newburg head coach Sam Potter.
"Credit their kids for stepping up and hitting free
throws down the stretch.
"I thought a big key to the game was the last
three minutes of the first quarter. I don’t think we
played good defense during that stretch. We made a couple
of bad decisions."
DeLong finished with a game-high 21 points to pace
Newburg.
Percival, who has signed to play for Missouri S&T
(formerly Missouri-Rolla), had 20 points – 17 in the
first half – for Hartville while Kaisler added 11
points.
"If Percival shoots next year the way she did
(last night) there will be a very happy coach at
S&T," Potter said. "She didn’t need much
room to get her shot off.
"I was really proud of how we finished our season.
Everybody played well down the stretch. They played hard,
and you can’t ask for more than that."
The individual scoring:
Newburg (47) – Snodgrass 2, Ellzey 9, DeLong 21,
Richmond 2, Lair 5, Sands 8.
Hartville (54) – Hughes 6, Arnall 6, Kaisler 11,

Lady
Wolves take on defending state champs in sectionals
NEWBURG – The Newburg High School girls’ basketball
team won its first district title in seven years.
Now all the Lady Wolves have to do to advance in the
playoffs is beat the defending state champion.
Newburg returns to Missouri Class 2 Sectional
competition on Wednesday, March 5 by taking on the
defending Class 2 state champions, Hartville. Tip-off is
scheduled for 6 p.m. at Marshfield High School.
In the boys’ sectional game at Marshfield Wednesday
another Frisco League school, Laquey, faces defending
Class 2 state finalist Mansfield.
The Newburg girls enter the game with a 14-12 record
while Hartville is 18-5. The fourth-seeded Lady Wolves
advanced by upsetting top-seeded Stoutland in the District
10 Tournament semifinals and third-seeded Richland in the
finals. Hartville advanced by defeating Couch 42-39 in the
District 9 Tournament title game last week.
The winner of the Newburg-Hartville game will advance
to the Class 2 Quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Willard
High School against the winner of the Crane (20-6)-Purdy
(21-4) sectional contest.
Those quarterfinal survivors will move on to the
semifinal/final round, to be held March 14-15 at the
Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
Newburg was one of the favorites to challenge for the
Frisco League title this season. However, it took nearly
all of the regular season for the Lady Wolves to put their
game together. In past years the Lady Wolves have played
one of the most challenging small-school schedules in the
area. This season was no different, as Newburg met such
large schools as Class 5 Quarterfinalist Waynesville,
20-game winning Class 4 team St. James (twice) and
highly-respected Class 4 squad Salem (twice).
It didn’t help the won-loss record, although the Lady
Wolves did upset Salem in the semifinals of the Newburg
Tournament.
But it certainly got the squad ready for post-season
play.
"That schedule was difficult," Potter said.
"We had games against some very good opponents. We
are playing our best ball now, and that’s exactly when
you want to play it.
"We just need to continue to play defense the way
we’ve been playing. Hartville has two extremely talented
players we need to try and keep under control."
The Hartville Lady Eagles had to regroup after losing
some key personnel from last season’s standout squad,
which clipped Westran 49-48 in the 2007 Missouri Class 2
Championship Game.
"It’s been a different world," Hartville
head coach Mike Percival said of this season. "This
year’s group and last year’s group are completely
different. We’ve had to adjust to things."
Hartville is starting three sophomores this season and
it’s taken them some time. "It was a learning
process," Percival said. "We graduated three
starters and our sixth-man. As we started the season it
was growth time. The last three or four weeks the young
kids have been figuring
things out and coming around."
Fortunately Percival had his daughter, returning 5-9
senior all-state guard-forward Brittany Percival, to rely
on.
Brittany Percival, who signed during the early signing
period with
Missouri Science & Technology (formerly
Missouri-Rolla), has had another outstanding season. She
is averaging 18.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.3
blocks and 2.2 steals.
Also starting for Hartville will be 5-7 junior Charity
Milbauer, 5-6 sophomore Maggie Arnall, 5-6 sophomore Blake
Kaisler and 5-6 sophomore Jasmin Hughes.
Top players off the bench include 5-6 senior Carley
Keith and 5-5 junior Lindsay Burke.
Arnall averages 12.3 points, 3.8 assists and 4.0
assists while Hughes averages 10.0 points and 5.2
rebounds; Milbauer 7.1 points, and Kaisler 6.4 points and
2.6 steals.
"They play good, solid defense and they don’t
make mistakes," Potter said of Hartville. "They
have an all-stater back in Percival and she shoots from
the outside well and posts up well; she’s a very good
all-around player.
"They shoot free throws extremely well; we can’t
afford to be behind late. They pretty much do what they
need to do to win – if they need to slow it up they can,
if they need to press they do it."
The Lady Wolves will counter with an all-senior
starting lineup of 5-11 Shayla Ellzey, 5-5 Kaitlin DeLong,
5-5 Kristen Reagan, 5-6 Kelsey Wells and 5-8 Krista
Snodgrass.
Off the bench will be 5-5 junior Jerrica Lair, 5-11
junior Amelia Sands and 5-8 junior Megan Richmond.
Ellzey, who has signed to play at Central Methodist,
was a coaches’ all-state selection and the Frisco League
MVP last season. This season her scoring average has
dropped as the Lady Wolves’ overall offensive balanced
has improved.
Ellzey is averaging 13.0 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.2
blocks, 2.5 steals and 3.0 assists. Also for Newburg
DeLong averages 10.7 points, 2.7 assists and is hitting
from a 33-percent clip from three-point range.
Lair averages 10.2 points, 1.3 steals and 2.3 assists.
"Sam does a good job," Mike Percival said.
"It sounds like Newburg was picked to finish strong
early on. I expect them to come in confident, relaxed and
ready to go."
